DIY Resin Ghosts: A Glowing Halloween Craft with Personality

A little translucent shimmer, a pair of wide eyes, and a softly glowing base—these DIY resin ghosts bring just the right amount of spooky charm to Halloween. Shape them with plastic wrap and a simple homemade form, then customize each one with glitter, mica powder, or tiny accessories.

Set a finished ghost over a battery-operated tea light, and its rippled edges catch the light like a floating sheet. Make one for a bookshelf or create a whole ghostly gathering for your Halloween table.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Clear craft epoxy resin and its matching hardener
  • Plastic wrap compatible with your resin
  • Mixing cups and stirring sticks
  • Nitrile gloves and splash-protection goggles
  • A protective covering for your work surface
  • A small, stable bottle or cup and a rounded object for the form
  • Tape
  • A disposable brush suitable for resin
  • Black acrylic paint or a paint marker
  • Optional fine glitter, resin-compatible mica powder, or miniature decorations
  • A battery-operated LED tea light

Safety first: Follow your resin manufacturer’s instructions for ventilation, protective equipment, mixing, and curing. Uncured resin can irritate skin and cause sensitization. This is an adult craft, or a project for older teens under close adult supervision—not a young children’s activity. Keep food, pets, and small children away from the workspace.

How to Make a Resin Ghost

1. Build a Simple Ghost Form

Stand a small bottle or cup on your protected work surface. Secure a rounded object on top to create the ghost’s head.

Keep the form narrow enough that you can remove it through the bottom of the finished ghost. Avoid wide shoulders or protrusions that could become trapped inside the hardened shell.

Plan for an open base that comfortably fits over your LED tea light.

2. Shape the Plastic Wrap

Cover the form with plastic wrap, leaving extra material around the bottom. Arrange the wrap into loose, flowing folds that resemble a ghost’s sheet.

Keep the folds broad rather than tightly crumpled. This makes the shape easier to coat and helps prevent the form from becoming trapped.

Plastic wrap varies in composition, so test a small amount with your chosen resin first to check whether it releases after curing. Avoid wrap that bonds to the resin.

3. Mix Your Resin

Measure and mix the resin and hardener exactly as directed on the product label. Different products use different ratios and working times, so don’t estimate.

For a glowing, translucent finish, leave the resin clear or add only a small amount of fine glitter or resin-compatible pigment. Too much mica can make the ghost opaque and hide the light inside.

4. Coat the Form

Use a disposable brush to spread resin over the outside of the shaped plastic wrap, keeping the bottom opening clear.

Choose a resin suitable for coating vertical surfaces; a very runny casting resin may simply drain off the form. Apply thin, controlled coats rather than flooding the surface. If additional coats are needed to create a self-supporting shell, follow the manufacturer’s recoating instructions.

Let the ghost cure in a protected, ventilated area for the full recommended time. A surface that feels dry may not yet be fully cured.

5. Remove the Form and Add a Face

Once the resin has fully cured, gently remove the support and peel away the plastic wrap.

Inspect the bottom edge before handling or displaying your ghost. If finishing is necessary, follow the resin manufacturer’s guidance and use appropriate dust protection.

Draw or paint two eyes and a little mouth on the shell. Round eyes look sweet; a long, oval mouth gives your ghost a surprised expression.

Easy Ways to Customize Your Ghost

  • Frosty phantom: Add a tiny amount of pearlescent mica for a cloudy shimmer.
  • Sparkling spirit: Use fine iridescent glitter to catch the LED light.
  • Tiny witch: Attach a miniature hat after curing.
  • Ghost family: Make several sizes and give each a different expression.
  • Pastel haunt: Try a sheer lavender or pale blue tint for a softer Halloween look.

Let It Glow

Place your finished ghost over a cool-running, battery-operated LED tea light, keeping the light accessible and following its operating instructions. Warm white creates a cozy glow, while a flickering amber light feels especially eerie.

Never use a real candle or another heat source beneath a resin ghost.

Display your glowing creation on a mantel, tuck it among miniature pumpkins, or package it with an LED tea light as a handmade Halloween gift. The uneven folds make every ghost a little different—and that’s part of the charm.
